What's With All The Fuss?
Unfussy style explained—via the metaphor of a very good turkey sandwich.
How would you describe your style?
It’s a question I got on IG recently. People have called my style “classic,” “elevated,” even “90s.” And while all of those might be true, the first word that came to my mind was different:
Unfussy.
The word surprised me. What does it really mean to have an unfussy style?
I know what it doesn’t mean: unfussy isn’t boring. It isn’t cheap. It isn’t careless.
If anything, unfussy has its own kind of sophistication—poise without the perfection.
And maybe this sounds strange, but the best way I can explain it is through… a sandwich. A turkey sandwich, to be exact.
Most people have eaten a turkey sandwich. Bread, mustard, cheese, turkey—unfussy, maybe even forgettable.
So there are turkey sandwiches, and then there are TURKEY SANDWICHES.
The same ingredient list, but completely different outcomes. One is fine. The other is unforgettable—because the ingredients are really damn good. Homemade sourdough, toasted to perfection. Stone-ground mustard. Local cheese. Fresh, slow-roasted turkey.
Unfussy also feels a little undone. Imagine the turkey or cheese slipping out the side of the bread—which is part of the charm. Contrast this with the “fussy” sandwich: cheese cut into perfect squares to fit just so. Edible, sure, but it lacks soul.
The same is true for fashion and beauty.
When I buy a bag, it’s pristine. Lovely, but flat. I’m already waiting for the softened handles, the scuffs. With wear, it becomes infinitely cooler.
Other examples: I like to line my lips, but I always make sure the line is smudged (perfect boundaries feel inhuman). I’ll splurge on a luxurious shampoo, but I dig a little bedhead. I love a pair of designer flats, especially when they’re paired with sweatpants. I like juxtaposition. I like lived-in. I like soul.
Unfussy also feels sustainable. Whether it’s a workout routine, an 80/20 diet, or the clothes I put on each day—it has to be dependable, approachable, repeatable. Effortless.
Because yes—you can usually tell when someone is trying to be unfussy.
The studied “effortless” hair that took three products and forty-five minutes. The “casual” outfit that’s actually twelve layers deep in trend forecasting. The kind of undone that’s so orchestrated, it loses its ease.
True unfussy style doesn’t announce itself as such—it just is.
Unfussy is confident enough to skip perfection. It’s elevated, but approachable.
It’s the slip dress worn with flats instead of heels.
It’s the trench coat thrown over jeans without obsessing about the exact shade of denim.
It’s the hair, air-dried and a little wild at the ends, pulled back into a claw clip.
And maybe that’s the secret: unfussy style isn’t about control. It’s about trust. Trusting your ingredients, trusting your instincts, trusting that ease is more interesting than effort.
Which is why the word feels right for me. Because unfussy isn’t just a way of dressing—it’s a way of moving through the world.
So yeah. That’s my style. Unfussy.

Loved this take on ‘unfussy’ style, Megan! I totally agree that ease starts from the inside out. For me, a truly simple and comfortable outfit begins with the right innerwear — if that’s not comfy, nothing feels effortless. I’ve been wearing Adira innerwear, and it keeps me totally fuss-free and comfortable all day. No scratching, no rashes — just easy, everyday comfort.
Love the way you’ve described your style—can perfectly picture it!
